M. C. Miller's The Leaves in Winter is mainly about the overpopulation dilemma, and what will happen mid-twenty-first century when a perfect storm of societal issues will interact to create a post-apocalyptic scenario. Leaves in Winter is like a medley between Children of Men, Contagion, and Endgame. The novel therefore incorporates "conspiracy theory" elements. However, Leaves in Winter isn't supposed to be a radically political novel with a hidden agenda. It's simply a what-if scenario, about which Miller enjoys writing. This makes the novel somewhat plausible, but there are aspects within the novel that are probably implausible.The Leaves in Winter is a hybrid between hard sci-fi, your average sci-fi with implausible spoofs, suspense, drama and smidgeons of other genres. It's well-written, shocking, somewhat engrossing, and contains interesting plot twists. However, it is sometimes hard to maintain your suspension of disbelief. My biggest gripe about the novel is that the ending is both underwhelming and stunted, and it leaves many loose ends that aren't resolved. The ending, in short, feels rushed, and the full impact of what's on the line doesn't hit you hard enough for a novel that deals with an overpopulation/pandemic crisis.
For a virtually unknown novel, however, this work of fiction is better than a lot of the more popular stuff that appears on Amazon's top 100 best-seller sci-fi list. It's not great, but it's fairly good, for those with open minds.
To give you a better feel for what to expect, I'll quote the legendary Asimov, whose quote appears at the back of Miller's book:
"Which is the greater danger--nuclear warfare or the population explosion? The latter absolutely!"
"To bring about nuclear war someone has to do something; someone has to press a button. And the immediate terror of the event inhibits the pointing finger...."
"To bring about destruction by overcrowding, mass starvation, anarchy, and the destruction of our most cherished values--there is no need to do anything. We need only do nothing except what comes naturally--and breed. There are 3 billion people on Earth now. There will be 6 billion perhaps in 2000. Nothing we can do short of nuclear or biological warfare of an extreme all-out nature will prevent that, if we do nothing."
"And how easy it is to do nothing."
It's definitely a very pessimistic view, but it's about time someone tries to raise this issue in a work of fiction, without trying to sound high and mighty in the process.

Another page turner from M.C. Miller. The characters are real and well developed. Miller surfaces the psychological compositions that influence each characters choices; creating tensions and intrigues throughout the book. I continue to be impressed with Miller's ability to tell a compelling story. Excellent read!
